The Lake County Office of Emergency Management is inviting residents to join its Adopt an Emergency Shelter program. The program offers an opportunity for individuals, non-profit, faith-based, private or community organizations to become involved in assisting the county’s emergency shelters during times of disaster.
“This program provided much needed support for shelters and citizens in times of need,” said Thomas Carpenter, director of Lake County Emergency Management. “By volunteering, residents can make a real difference in their community. There are numerous benefits to volunteering, including supporting our most vulnerable populations, team building and gaining new knowledge and skills.”
Lake County Emergency Management will provide mandatory training for all volunteers wishing to assist in shelter operations. Once applicants have undergone and pass a county background check, they will be asked to agree to a one-year commitment to work at an emergency shelter during times of need.
Volunteers are involved in the day-to-day operations of an emergency shelter before, during and after a hurricane. Tasks may include checking in residents and pets, serving meals, delivering supplies, record keeping, and educating families about disaster preparedness.
